A little bit about your guide
Welcome to Self-Mastery HQ, a place dedicated to exploring personal growth, mental clarity, and inner strength. My name is Michael, and I created this platform to share the knowledge I’ve gained on my journey so far. This site is rooted in my passion for understanding the human mind and it’s capacities. An interest I have always had, but which really took off after my own transformation began over 15 years ago when I took the life-changing step of getting clean and sober. A step that required an enormous amount of introspection and the realization that changing myself involves learning tools and strategies to overcome my own skeletons and demons. It also required an awareness of how I would often sabotage my own progress, simply because the human brain is wired to maintain the status quo, whether it’s good or bad. I have found this to be a fairly universal trait that most of us, as Homo sapiens, share. So looking for tools to correct this seems like a good idea to me.
A Journey of Transformation
Life has a way of giving each of us our fair share of challenges. For me, the road to self-reliance began early. I lost my mother at the age of four, and from then on, it was just my dad and me. My father studied medicine and was often away, so he moved us into a commune so I wouldn’t be home alone all the time. This meant I grew up among hippies, but I also attended a wide variety of schools – private, public, and boarding.So as long as I can remember, I’ve experienced life through different lenses, seeing both the privileges and struggles of people from all walks of life.
In my teenage years, I discovered rock ‘n’ roll along with a strong appetite for reckless living. This unlocked my creative side but also led me down a destructive path. When my father and his wife lost their lives in a drowning accident when I was 18, I pretty much lost faith in everything. I was consumed by anger, grief, and self-pity, which drove me into years of reckless behavior marked by heavy drinking, drug use, and a lack of purpose. The only things that kept me from completely falling apart were my martial arts practice and playing music – these were the only two things I cared about. Eventually, I hit rock bottom and realized I was spiraling out of control. I needed to make a change or risk losing everything.
The Turning Point: Embracing Self-Responsibility
It was in that moment of clarity – literally at five in the morning after a two day bender (quite a story in itself, that I’ll be happy to share on another occasion) – that I took the most important step of my life: I decided to take responsibility for my actions and my future. I checked into rehab and, after leaving, continued on my path to recovery with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The 12 steps of AA became the first structured self-development program I ever followed. This got me started on the path to rebuilding my life and gave me the first tools to start working on myself from the inside out.
This was the first major step on my lifelong journey toward self-mastery – a journey that continues to evolve every day. Since those early days, I have explored a wide range of practices, from martial arts and yoga to strength training, meditation, breathwork, cold exposure and fasting. Each of these disciplines has helped me gain a deeper understanding of myself and what it truly means to be in control of one’s own life.
A Global Perspective on Growth
Over the years, my desire for self-discovery and growth has led me to travel extensively. I’ve spent nearly six years combined traveling the world, primarily Asia, Africa, South America, and North America. These travels have broadened my perspective, allowing me to understand different approaches to life, health, and spirituality.
Along the way, I also became a father to two wonderful daughters, a mental health nurse, and, most recently, an entrepreneur. These roles have given me further insights into the human condition, as well as the importance of balance in life. Being a father taught me about unconditional love and responsibility, while my work as a mental health nurse has shown me the incredible resilience of the human spirit, the importance of mindset, and, most importantly, the profound impact we can have on our minds when given the right tools.

Self-mastery is not a destination – it’s a continuous journey. It goes far beyond just self-discipline and motivation. True self-mastery means understanding yourself on a deep level, knowing what drives you, and being in tune with your core values. It’s about cultivating a balance between your physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, so you can show up as the best version of yourself in every area of life.

In my experience, financial stability plays a critical role in allowing us to focus on the things that matter most. When you are not burdened by financial stress, you have more mental and emotional space to dedicate to your personal growth.
I believe that part of being self-reliant is being able to support yourself and your loved ones financially. This doesn’t mean chasing after material wealth for its own sake. Instead, it’s about creating a stable foundation from which you can pursue your passions, contribute to the world, and live in alignment with your values.
